The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) is the largest nonprofit mountain biking organization in the Southeast. Our members work with land managers in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee to create trails and trail systems for mountain bikers and other users to enjoy. Through advocacy, education, and recreational opportunities, SORBA carries out its mission to promote land access, trail preservation, and new trail development in order to enhance mountain bike touring, racing, fun, and fellowship for all mountain bicyclists in the southeastern United States.
We have partnered with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and now represent over 4,000 members who help steward miles and miles of great trails in a seven-state area. The best riding in the Southeast is found on trails maintained by our volunteers. Our members love singletrack, rocks, roots, and logs, and we employ IMBA's trailbuilding practices to ensure that our trails are sustainable and challenging.
IMBA-SORBA relies on our wonderful members to carry out our mission. Our volunteers donate thousands of hours each year to advocate for trail access, build trails, and maintain trails. IMBA-SORBA volunteers take pride in their work, and it shows in the trails that they build. Our digital news magazine, the Fat Tire Times, showcases member involvement, advocacy issues, trail information and much more. Join IMBA-SORBA today!

Prestigious award honors City’s efforts to promote bicycling
GREENVILLE (SC) The League of American Bicyclists has honored Greenville with its prestigious Bicycle Friendly Community award. Greenville joins Columbia and Spartanburg as South Carolina's only Bicycle Friendly Communities. The League of American Bicyclists’ mission is to promote bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and work through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. Greenville was granted the bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation for four years and the League of American Bicyclists will provide the City with feedback on what it can do to make Greenville even more bicycle-friendly. Announcement of the Bicycle Friendly Community designation comes at an ideal time as the City plans to begin a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan study in January 2010.
The City began its Bicycle Friendly Community initiative, named Bikeville in 2006 with a City Council resolution endorsing the League of American Bicyclists Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities. Bikeville is a committee of volunteers comprised of City staff, engineers, planners, retailers and advocates who collaborate on efforts to encourage and educate bicyclists, and the plan established specific goals that ranged from installing bicycle racks on all Greenlink buses to celebrating National Bike Month every May. |

IMBA Recognizes Local Bike Shops During Interbike Industry Breakfast |
|
Wednesday, 21 October 2009 |
Dan Thornton, Tom Hughes, and Mike Nix show off their IMBA awards as Mike Van Able, IMBA’s Executive Director, looks on. During the standing-room-only IMBA Interbike Industry Breakfast on September 24th, Tom Hughes, owner of Bike Town USA in Gainesville, GA, and Dan Thornton of Free-Flite Bicycles in Marietta, GA, received plaques to reward them for reaching Platinum Status, and Mike Nix, owner of Liberty Bikes in Asheville, NC, was award IMBA Gold Status. Platinum Status, IMBA’s highest level of recognition, is awarded to retail shops for their long-standing financial contributions to IMBA that exceed $2,500. Gold Status recognizes contributions of over $1,000. Only three other shops nationally achieved Platinum Status, Bicycle Sport Shop, TX; Shenandoah Bicycle Co., PN.; and Wheel and Sprocket, WI.
Tom, Dan, and Mike are long-time supporters of IMBA-SORBA, and they richly deserve this recognition for their efforts to further mountain biking advocacy in their local areas. Tom has been active throughout the development of the Gainesville State College and Chicopee Woods Mountain Bike Trail systems, and Dan has supported a multitude of projects in the Atlanta area, most recently the creation of the Van Michael Trail at Blankets Creek in Woodstock and the A. L. Burruss Family Mountain Bike Park in Marietta. Mike has long been involved in advocacy and was instrumental is establishing the Western North Carolina Bicycle Dealer’s Association Biker Bucks program, which offers discounts to those who join IMBA-SORBA and perform trail work. These shop owners understand the importance of vibrant, local trail systems and the chapters that make them happen, and they will continue to support IMBA-SORBA’s mission. |

Dirt, Sweat, and Gears 12 Hour Endurance Race Supports IMBA/SORBA |
|
Wednesday, 21 October 2009 |
Nashville TN, September 16, 2009 - The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association Middle Tennessee was this year's recipient of the ‘BIG CHECK” from the Dirt, Sweat & Gears 12 Hour Mountain Bike Endurance Race held May 9, 2009. A whopping total of $3505 was raised despite the peanut buttery Tennessee mud that was ever present for the 3rd annual running of this epic 12 hour race. Again DSG proved to be a success in pulling mountain bikers together. The Cotton Mill Preserve is the perfect setting for this growing regional event and is a testament to the nurturing culture of mountain biking.
SwiftWick CEO Mark Cleveland stated, "This race is a special event, with an atmosphere that reflects the people who make it happen. It’s a competitive group of athletes, committed to their passion, to trail riding and the great outdoors. Together, the riders at DSG and the sponsors are giving back to improve the trails we love so much."
IMBA/SORBA is the southeastern voice of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) and has been involved with DSG from the beginning by offering volunteer trail work and marketing contributions. This is a benchmark example of when a private event and preserve gives back to a volunteer organization and public trails. |

Blue Competition Cycles to Provide Funds to IMBA-SORBA for Trail Development |
|
Wednesday, 09 September 2009 |
NORCROSS, GA – September 8, 2009. Blue Competition Cycles, a leading manufacturer of high-performance bicycles, announced today they will donate $100 to the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) and the Southern Off Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) for each Blue mountain bike sold during the next year. The funds will primarily be used to create and maintain riding trails.
“We are pleased to get such generous support from Blue,” said IMBA-SORBA Executive Director and IMBA regional director Tom Sauret. “Their commitment goes far beyond building great mountain bikes. They are mountain bikers themselves and have been involved in our sport for many years. This money will be put to good use, primarily to establish new trails to support the growth of mountain biking.”
“We love mountain biking and I can think of no better way to show it than by supporting IMBA-SORBA in their efforts to open new trails,” said Chance Regina of Blue Competition Cycles. “The timing is perfect because we just introduced a new all-carbon-fiber, hard tail mountain bike called the XC2 to go along with the Ryno, our full-suspension bike launched in 2009. We are proud to work with such a great organization on such an important project,” Regina continued. “Their hard work has created a great environment for mountain bikers and we want to be sure that work continues.”
The program begins immediately and will continue for the next 12 months.

NPS Hosts Sope Creek Mountain Bike Trail Ribbon Cutting |
|
Thursday, 06 August 2009 |
The National Parks Service Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area hosted a Ribbon Cutting on August 1, 2009 to honor the volunteers and supporters that made the Sope Creek Mountian Bike Trail improvements possible. SORBA (Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association), Crossroads Alternative School, and 3 REI stores contributed much time on multiple work days to work on the mountain bike trail to implement the improvements. Over 4000 volunteer hours were donated on this project, with SORBA alone donating 1100 hours. Coca-Cola Scholars and 5 local businesses and organizations were also involved. Thanks to their efforts, the CRNRA now has 4 new sustainable trail sections that have by-passed problem areas that had major resource damage and were safety hazards for park users. Although the work was completed and the new sections were opened in June, the Ribbon Cutting ceremony officially opened the new trail re-alignments to the public.
