Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) would like to invite you and members of your organization to attend a public scoping meeting for an upcoming Environmental Assessment (EA) of new trail connections in three different units of the park. The meeting will be held at the following location and time:
CRNRA Headquarters
Hewlett Lodge Conference Room
1978 Island Ford Parkway
Sandy Springs, GA 30350
Thursday, October 29, 2009
7 – 9 p.m.
The meeting will address the development of new trail connections in the Sope Creek, Johnson Ferry South, and Bowmans Island units of the park. The evaluation of improvements in the connectivity and sustainability of the Sope Creek bicycle and pedestrian trails will be based on plans originally developed in 2001, which proposed the creation of new trails and closure of existing trails that suffer from poor design and maintenance. The existing trail system includes many social trails, and some trail sections follow old roadbeds that predate the establishment of the park. Many of the trails are unsustainable or unplanned and not suitable for their current use.
The Johnson Ferry South trail connection entails developing and evaluating alternatives for a trail that would extend from Johnson Ferry Road through the Johnson Ferry South Unit and connect to Columns Drive. The trail would originate at a planned underpass associated with the replacement of Johnson Ferry Road Bridge. The central portion of the trail, which comprises the majority of the trail, will follow an old road bed that parallels the Chattahoochee River.
The Bowmans Island trail connection focuses on an area of land to the west of the river, which consists of large northern and southern tracts joined together by a narrow strip of park property. Trails within this strip of land have never been formally developed, but a number of social trails have emerged over time. The EA will examine alternatives for developing a formal system of trails and bridges that would connect the northern and southern tracts in a safe and sustainable manner.
The public scoping and comment period will be open through November 20, 2009.
Following the public scoping meeting and comment period, the park will develop project alternatives to be evaluated in the EA. A second public comment period will occur once the EA is complete. If you are unable to attend the public scoping meeting, you may submit comments or questions on the proposed project by mail (Superintendent, Chattahoochee River NRA, 1978 Island Ford Parkway; Sandy Springs, GA 30350) or electronic mail (
