The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) is the largest nonprofit mountain biking organization in the Southeast. Our members work with land managers in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee to create trails and trail systems for mountain bikers and other users to enjoy. Through advocacy, education, and recreational opportunities, SORBA carries out its mission to promote land access, trail preservation, and new trail development in order to enhance mountain bike touring, racing, fun, and fellowship for all mountain bicyclists in the southeastern United States.
We have partnered with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and now represent over 4,000 members who help steward miles and miles of great trails in a seven-state area. The best riding in the Southeast is found on trails maintained by our volunteers. Our members love singletrack, rocks, roots, and logs, and we employ IMBA's trailbuilding practices to ensure that our trails are sustainable and challenging.
IMBA-SORBA relies on our wonderful members to carry out our mission. Our volunteers donate thousands of hours each year to advocate for trail access, build trails, and maintain trails. IMBA-SORBA volunteers take pride in their work, and it shows in the trails that they build. Our digital news magazine, the Fat Tire Times, showcases member involvement, advocacy issues, trail information and much more. Join IMBA-SORBA today!

Augusta to Host 2010 IMBA World Mountain Bike Summit |
|
Tuesday, 30 June 2009 |
We’ve always know that SOBA CSRA rocked, and now the world knows it, too! The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) has announced that Augusta, Georgia, will host the 2010 IMBA World Summit (May 5-8). Mayor Deke Copenhaver proclaimed, “It is truly an honor to host the IMBA gathering in Augusta. Our city continues to grow in its reputation as a bicycling destination, and this event will showcase our region to a worldwide audience of trail enthusiasts.”
The event, expected to be the largest yet in IMBA's history of hosting international summits, is open to the public. Topics will include destination and urban trail networks, land conservation and sustainable trails, youth outreach and new programs designed to grow local capacity for the 700+ clubs and patrols in IMBA’s global network. In addition to informative seminars and networking, the gathering will feature great parties and plenty of riding -- including a catered tour of the Forks Area Trail System (FATS), an IMBA Epic.
“The Augusta summit will serve as an essential clearinghouse to advance information on everything to do with mountain biking and trail-based recreation,” states IMBA Executive Director Mike Van Abel. “We will bring leaders in trail design together with land managers, the bicycle industry and IMBA’s thriving grassroots clubs. These are the key influencers that shape the sport, and only an IMBA summit can connect them all in the same place, at the same time.” Attendees will receive copious educational materials, while connecting with mountain biking enthusiasts from around the globe.

We, Paulding SORBA, are at it again and have an exciting year ahead of us. We've broken ground at Mt.Tabor Park by initiating another Gateway Trails project. This trail network will target our community here in Paulding County and hopefully provide many of you an opportunity to improve the community
you inhabit.
We're are starting several initiatives which encompass many facets of giving back. "Make Your Mark " which describes a
volunteer drive we are hoping to get rolling to aide in the construction of nearly 7 miles of trails to be built at Mt. Tabor. We are hoping that many of
you will opt to either ride or hike these trails to increase your fitness, nature hikes, etc. These trails are going to be interpretive for all users alike. We hope to have several fund raisers throughout the summer to aide us in purchasing signage that will describe these trails.

Harbins Alcovy Park and Trail System Grand Opening |
|
Tuesday, 10 March 2009 |
|
Join the Gwinnett Area Trail Riders (GATR) in Dacula, Georgia on Saturday, March 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the Grand Opening of Harbins Alcovy Park and Trail System, Gwinnett County’s newest and largest park. Be among the first to ride a trail system that has yet to be touched by mountain bike tires! Ride on almost 7 miles or pristine trails that offer a smattering of roots and rocks served up in either a thick loam or clay surface.
This event has something for everyone, including group rides, bike skills clinics for kids and beginners, and demo bikes from Appalachee Cycles and Bikeways of Tucker. The Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation department is providing free hot dogs and drinks for the affair. Celebrate mountain biking, and enjoy Gwinnett County’s newest park. The park is located at 2295 Luke Edwards Rd, Dacula, GA 30019.
The unprecedented level of coordination between Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, Aaron Steele of SAI Trails, and GATR chapter of SORBA on the design and build of the mountain bike trail system at Harbins Park has led to fantastic results. The success of this effort was made possible by leadership from Dave Greenwell and Darryl Clark and by many volunteer hours contributed over the last four months by our chapter members. Come out and experience it for yourself!

Thanks our partners at Gary Fisher Bicycles and Atlanta Cycling, two members won a new mountain bike. This is done with a contest run with the Subaru Tour de SORBA promotion, now in it's forth year. New in 2008 was an increased grand prize drawing to two bikes, in addition to some other nice stuff.
Ann Ledbetter won the June 2008 drawing and got sized up for a Gary Fisher Rig. In December 2008, we drew the second winner, Keith Manthey. He contacted Atlanta Cycling to receive his prize, and during the process found out there was a Gary Fisher Paragon available in his size. So the deal was struck, and he became the happy owner.
When I asked Todd Melton, Atlanta Cycling General Manager, about signing on for 2009 he told me, "Whatever I can do for SORBA and the promotion of mountain biking". Needless to say they are on board for another year, and two lucky members with be taking home a new Gary Fisher Rig.
Securing these prizes for our members all started with help from Shawn Stokley, Trek Bicycles Territory Manager, and long-time supporter of SORBA. He is always talking to his clients about helping the cause for mountain bike advocacy and that they should try to support us in any way they can. He also help get the wheels turning last year to bring Gary Fisher to a couple of fundraising activates for SORBA. It was great to have a conversation with Gary, as the recent release of the film Klunkers was a source of many questions about how mountain biking got started in Marin County, California. The one point Gary made a few times, after hearing many thanks for his part in getting this sport started was, "I want to thank you for becoming part of mountain biking, it wouldn't be what it is today without all of us."

Trail Riders and Land Agencies Both Win When They Cooperate |
|
Monday, 09 February 2009 |
Two wonderful trail projects are being developed as you read this. Each project is at a different stage of development, but both are the result of supportive cooperation between volunteers and the responsible government land manager agency. Neither project would exist without this cooperation. Both projects were initiated by volunteer suggestions and supporting action. The Dry Creek Trail System is the larger of the two projects. It will provide 25 miles of shared trails to be enjoyed by equestrians, mountain bicyclists, and hikers. The Garland Mountain Horse & Hike Trails will provide 12 miles of trails shared by equestrians and hikers. Both trail systems will provide multiple loops so users may travel short or long distances as they desire.
