The Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) is the largest nonprofit mountain biking organization in the Southeast. Our members work with land managers in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee to create trails and trail systems for mountain bikers and other users to enjoy. Through advocacy, education, and recreational opportunities, SORBA carries out its mission to promote land access, trail preservation, and new trail development in order to enhance mountain bike touring, racing, fun, and fellowship for all mountain bicyclists in the southeastern United States.

We have partnered with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) and now represent over 4,000 members who help steward miles and miles of great trails in a seven-state area. The best riding in the Southeast is found on trails maintained by our volunteers. Our members love singletrack, rocks, roots, and logs, and we employ IMBA's trailbuilding practices to ensure that our trails are sustainable and challenging.

IMBA-SORBA relies on our wonderful members to carry out our mission. Our volunteers donate thousands of hours each year to advocate for trail access, build trails, and maintain trails. IMBA-SORBA volunteers take pride in their work, and it shows in the trails that they build. Our digital news magazine, the Fat Tire Times, showcases member involvement, advocacy issues, trail information and much more. Join IMBA-SORBA today!

The Subaru Tour de SORBA contest has selected the first winner of a new mountain bike for the year. Ann Ledbetter of Smyrna Georgia is the June 2008 Grand Prize Winner. She entered the contest in February at the Snake Creek Gap time trial which is organized by the Northwest Georgia SORBA chapter. Ann has won a nice new Gary Fisher Rig, 29-inch Singlespeed, mountain bike. This was made possible by our partnerships with Subaru of America, Atlanta Cycling and Gary Fisher Bikes. See Ann pictured with Walt Bready and Darren May (Subaru of America) at the Subaru South Central Regional Marketing office, and then again with Walt and Chad at the Atlanta Cycling bike shop.

There were more winners in the June drawing. Chris Green of Aberdeen, NC won a mighty new Yakima StickUp bike rack. Gennie Dasinger of Dalton, GA and Sunny Sandidge of Atlanta, GA won a certificate for a sweet new Thomson seatpost or stem. Scott Gentile of Brentwood, TN, Jayce Powell of Ridgeland, MS, Shana Culberson of Kingston Springs, TN and Mark McCabe of Alpharetta, GA won a cool new pair of Optic Nerve sunglasses.

Busy spring and summer in Middle Tennessee
Wednesday, 06 August 2008
ImageEvents:
SORBA-IMBA Middle Tennessee's 1st annual RUMBLE at the ROCK cross country race finished off the 6th annual Fat Tire Fest at Hamilton Creek in Nashville. The 6.5 mile course was a bit damp for the first lap or two, but by the end of the Sport race, the trail was back to its rocky self. This 1st annual romp offered up 92 TBRA (Tennessee Bicycle Racer's Association) racers on top of the 150+ on site for Saturday's skills course, Pinnacle hill climb time trial, skid contest and kids events. The weekend was a huge hit, and we look forward to next year.

Our August 2nd Ride/ social at Lock 4 in Gallatin, TN had a great turnout. We challenged our mountain bike community to come out and ride one of our favorite trails, bring a friend and just have some fun in the dirt. We had several ride leaders that made the day a success along with our membership directors Amy and Scott Walvoord. Thanks again to Kelly Benward and all the ride leaders, Chris Cooper, Reed Lilly, and Tim Spencer. We had a large rider turnout on a perfect day on the trail.

Best of all, we had the opportunity to show several new members what we are all about. Yep, the day is always a success when we grow our membership and see so many trail and advocacy stewards out RIDING on the trails we maintain. Su-weet!

Tool fund
On July 2nd this year we started a tool fund to add some key professional-grade tools to our trail work arsenal. Within only a few weeks we exceeded $900 to add to the $500 from the Maverick Bicycle silent auction at the 2008 Dirt, Sweat and Gears 12 hour race. We have already purchased one mac-daddy Stihl brush cutter and are scheming for the next addition. Please help us grow this fund by hitting the DONATE link at www.sorbamidtn.org or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Fontana Festival Takes Kids Mountain Biking
Wednesday, 06 August 2008
What's a great way for kids to enjoy the outdoors? Take them on a mountain bike ride. And that is just what happened on July 19th thanks to the organizers of the Fontana Fest. The Fontana Fest Mountain Bike Festival is a family-oriented fundraiser to benefit The Mountain Community School Bike Club. The festival features group rides to Tsali and Fontana Village trails, live music, games and contests, and much more. This year Rusty Sprocket Productions and Pisgah Area SORBA partnered to put on a kids ride.

The SORBA Trips for Kids bikes, which at stored at Gainesville State College, where loaded up and delivered to the event via the Subaru Tour de SORBA Forester. We fitted a few bikes at Fontana Village Saturday morning and then headed over to Tsali for a ride. It was a beautiful summer day to explore the Thompson loop trail. Tsali has long been a mountain bike destination in the southeast and we saw a few familiar faces, jerseys and bikes on the trail.

Chicopee Woods Work Party on July 26th, sponsored by Gainesville SORBA and MAXXIS
Wednesday, 18 June 2008
ImageAnd, boy, do we mean party!! If you're a Crew Leader or volunteer, step up and help finish the newly cut trail at Chicopee Woods! SORBA Pro Trails and Gainesville SORBA have been working hard over the past several months cutting new trail, re-routing existing trails, building bridges, and just making Chicopee Woods a better place to ride. They still have a lot of finish work to do, and they're asking you to help them get it done! The party date is July 26th, 2008, and the location is Chicopee Woods Mountain Bike Trails in Gainesville, GA. We'll get the party started at 9 a.m. and finish up at 1:30 p.m.

If new trails aren't enough motivation to get you to swing a pulaski or lop some limbs, perhaps free stuff will reel you in. Our fantastic sponsors are kicking in for lunch and a schwag raffle for the volunteers! Along with our friends at Maxxis, Trek and CamelBak are throwing in goodies for our worker bees. All volunteers will have a chance to score bike gear-such as new tires, a multi-tool, or maybe a hydration pack. Come on out, and see how lucky you can be!

Well folks. It's done.

After nine months of hard work, over 2,600 volunteer man hours, a few surprises and paperwork galore, the newest trails at Blankets Creek are ready to ride!

The fundraising campaign that was vital to completing the Van Michael Trail and Mosquito Bite in such a short time frame has attracted over $60,000 in cash contributions. A lot of generous people have donated money, food and swag to raise the funds to rent the equipment and pay Pro-Trails to cut the trails.
